Bespoke Staircases in Dorset

Hurlstone Joinery designs and builds staircases in Dorset, made by hand by Ollie Hurlstone in his own workshop. Every staircase is custom built to fit your space and suit the property, so it works with the house rather than fighting it. Ollie makes timber staircases from scratch using quality materials and traditional joinery.

No two homes are the same, so he doesn’t work from a standard kit. He’ll take the measurements, work out what suits the space and the way you use it, then build a wooden staircase made to measure. Straight, turned, whatever the room needs.

A staircase gets used every day for years, so it has to be solid as well as looking right. Ollie takes care over the joinery so there’s no creaking and no give, and he’ll match the timber and the finish to the rest of your home so it sits in like it’s always been there. Bespoke staircases done properly aren’t cheap, but they’re built to last a lifetime.

Questions

Can you fit a staircase into a tight or awkward space?

Yes. A handmade staircase can be designed around the space you actually have, which is often the only way to make a stair work in an older or smaller home. Ollie will look at the space and design a timber staircase that fits properly and feels safe to use.

What timbers can a staircase be made from?

Staircases can be made in a range of timbers depending on the look you’re after, from oak for a natural feature stair to softwood where it’s going to be painted or carpeted. Ollie will talk through the options and what suits both your home and your budget.

Do you handle building regs and Part K?

A new staircase needs to meet building regulations, including Part K which covers safety: step dimensions, handrails and guarding. Ollie builds his staircases to comply and can talk you through what the regulations mean for your design.
