Bespoke Wooden Gates in Dorset

Hurlstone Joinery makes bespoke wooden gates in Dorset, all built by hand by Ollie Hurlstone in his own workshop. Whether you want driveway gates, garden gates or a proper entrance gate, he builds them made to measure to fit your opening and suit your home. Every set is built from scratch using quality timber and traditional joinery, so it lasts.

Ollie works with hardwood and softwood depending on what you’re after and what suits the spot. Some people want a heavy pair of hardwood gates for the front of the house. Others want something simpler for the garden. Either way, he’ll build it to fit, not cut down from something off the shelf.

Because the gates are made to measure, they sit right and they swing right. No gaps where there shouldn’t be, no fighting to close them in winter. Ollie makes driveway gates, entrance gates and garden gates, and he takes care over the bits you don’t always see, like the joints and the fixings, because that’s what keeps a gate going for years.

If you’d like automation, Ollie can fit electric gate openers too, so your driveway gates open without you getting out of the car. That side’s optional. Plenty of people just want a solid set of timber gates they can open by hand.

Questions

Can you automate or electrify wooden gates?

The gates themselves are handmade by Ollie, and where you want automation he can build them to take an electric gate system and work alongside the installer who fits the motors and electrics. It’s worth raising automation at the start so the gates are made with it in mind.

Hardwood or softwood for a wooden gate?

For gates that face the Dorset weather day in, day out, hardwood is the harder-wearing choice and tends to last longer, while softwood can be a fair option for a lighter or more sheltered gate. Ollie will recommend what makes sense for where your gate sits.

How long does a bespoke gate take?

Because each wooden gate is handmade to order, timescales depend on the design, the timber and how busy the workshop is. Ollie will give you a realistic lead time when he quotes, so you know where you stand before you commit.
